Following the advice of Claudio and Solar, I was able to get JtR Jumbo
working.  I first used a fresh OS install to handle the mistakes with
openSSL and some other issues I had come across.  Then I installed
libssl-dev and bleeding jumbo. Make succeeded and I had a compiled version
of john.
