Conjecture, but if you are correct, that could be because the earliest PowerPC kernels were MkLinux. The goal was making it work on Power Macs that didn't have OpenFirmware *and* IBM RS/6000 machines, so that could have been a purposeful design decision that wasn't thought through enough. --arw -- A.
