The following worked for me on MacOS 10.13.6.  Once you download and unarchive the source from <>, do the following:

./Configure darwin64-x86_64-cc --prefix=/usr/local
sudo make install

This installs OpenSSL in the /usr/local directory and JTR jumbo should build.
