Did enable OpenMP in making john.
Running john and top for having a look at the CPU usage it says, it "utilizes" 617% CPU!
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

I guess this is due to the fact it runs on a MP CPU and top is just miscalculating the CPU utilization.
