I can't comment on the MinGW support - this is JimF's stuff that I've
blindly merged into the jumbo patch along with his other changes.

You could want to upgrade to john-1.7.4-jumbo-4 now.  Of course, this is
unrelated to your compile problem.

Most likely, your Cygwin install is not sufficiently complete.  Please
try installing the openssl-devel package, and please don't forget to let
the list know whether this helped or not.
