This is a correction to my own posting:

The above would not work, because on one hand it requires a recompile
with adjusted CHARSET_* settings in order to allow for the 8-bit chars
in Extra, but on the other JtR recompiled with this change to CHARSET_*
won't accept the original alpha.chr file anymore.
