Understood.  I agree with the answers provided by RB (thanks!) - the
code in JtR is special-purpose - it is intended for password cracking,
not for generating hashes for other uses.

You can find Perl scripts that will generate all of the hash types
supported by JtR natively, as well as NTLM, in this older posting:

These scripts use the Authen::Passphrase module from CPAN.

Kalgecin, Rich - being a moderator of john-users, I had to manually edit
your recent postings in the moderation queue to remove extraneous
quoting (I made no other changes, indeed).  Please be more careful next
time you post.  I hear that Gmail may sometimes hide quoted text, yet
send it along with the message...
