I agree with the answers provided by RB (thanks!) - the code in JtR is special-purpose - it is intended for password cracking, not for generating hashes for other uses. You can find Perl scripts that will generate all of the hash types supported by JtR natively, as well as NTLM, in this older posting: http://www.openwall.com/lists/john-users/2008/06/18/3 These scripts use the Authen::Passphrase module from CPAN.
