You appear to be running a PPC build of JtR on an Intel Mac, using
Rosetta emulation.  I suspect that your problem is related to the
emulation.  Also, even if we somehow get this resolved, you'll get poor
performance in this way.

I suggest that you do a native build for Intel.  The command to build
your JtR 1.7.0.1 would be:

	make clean macosx-x86-mmx

You may also get much better performance if you use JtR 1.7.2 instead.
The command to build that would be:

	make clean macosx-x86-sse2
