It was announced in

I really couldn't think of any better option names short of picking 
silly and unintuitive ones.

Attacking it from a different angle, we could add some notion of options 
being "abbreviatable or not" so eg. --input-encoding has to be spelled 
out fully [or tab completed from "-in"].
