Apologies for hijacking the thread.

Running john when built with debugging enabled results in the following
output for many formats,

$ john hash
Loaded X password hash (...)
No password hashes loaded (see FAQ)

I have verified that john.pot is empty.

The same hash is loaded and cracked just fine if debugging is disabled.
