Actually, older/commercial Unices don't support the "z" option with tar,
so one has to (download and) run gzip separately, like:

	gzip -dc john-1.7.1.tar.gz | tar xf -

Compilers are not bundled with Solaris.  There used to be a free
time-limited trial that you could download separately - then you'd need
to purchase the product (which was not cheap).  Apparently, now the
compilers became free (as in beer, not as in speech):
