That's what I would suspect, too.  Are you possibly FTPing in ASCII mode
or something?

Anyway, you really should download the official source code package and
compile it on your own instead.  The package on Sunfreeware is of
version 1.6, which I released over 7 years ago.  Current "stable" is
version 1.7.0.2, released this March.

You will need a C compiler.  gcc_small-3.4.2-sol9-sparc-local.gz listed
on http://www.sunfreeware.com/programlistsparc9.html should work for
your Solaris 9 SPARC box.  Then compile John with either the
"solaris-sparc64-gcc" or the "solaris-sparc-gcc" make target.  (The
former should produce faster code.)
