Nvidia wasn't an alternative to AMD a year ago but a single machine with 
eight of these "will be nearly as fast as our old 25-GPU VCL cluster 
combined" as epixoip said.

As a bonus, this card draws 17% less power then a R9 290X despite being 
60% faster - no cooling problems. Not to mention driver quality. 
Apparently there will soon be a cheaper version, GTX 980Ti, with "only" 
6GB RAM and same or better speed.
