There is a package on Ubuntu called build-essential. If you install that
it should be possible to compile john from source by just opening a
console and typing make <target> from the JohnTheRipper/src directory.
If you run the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, try make linux-x86-64-native.
After compilation is finished the binaries will be in the directory
JohnTheRipper/run.
