I have compiled a binary version of john-1.7.9-jumbo-6 for MacOS 10.7 and 10.8.  You can download the binary from here:

I have not tested it extensively, so any feedback is welcome.  I have not tested it on MacOS 10.5 or 10.6 (Intel CPUs only), so let me know if you have success running on those MacOS version.
