Jim and I debugged this, and it turned out to be a bug in the Keyboard
external mode itself.  You may use the john.conf patch found in:

http://www.openwall.com/lists/john-dev/2012/02/07/3

(There's also a compiler.c patch in that posting, but you don't need it.
I only needed it to reproduce the problem on non-Windows.)
