Not 1.7.9 specifically, but yes:

You need to apply the john-1.7.8-allcuda-0.3.diff patch on top of the
1.7.8 release (non-jumbo). You can download 1.7.8 here:

Yes, you need an NVidia card for the current implementation.
You'll probably want to run two instances of John at once: one for your
GPU and the other for your CPU cores (maybe setting OMP_NUM_THREADS=5
will be more optimal then, leaving one CPU core for the GPU run - you'll
need to experiment with this).
