Sorry, haven't tried linux versions this time - only cygwin. If you
can post the error message+warnings received during compilation I
guess the community will try to help you.

It is simple - there are no .chr files available via cvs (you can check
it here http://cvsweb.openwall.com/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/Owl/packages/john/john/run/)
just add yours (custom-made, from any previous version or just from
openwall's ftp sources).
