This is because you have regenerated your alpha.chr with your new build
of JtR (as you mentioned in another posting).

This is because you're probably using the original all.chr, which your
build of JtR with modified CHARSET_* settings is no longer compatible
with.  That's as expected.

My advice is that you keep both binaries of "john", maybe under
different names in the same directory, maybe in different directories,
and use the appropriate binary for the .chr file you use each time.

Alternatively, you may consider my suggestions (from the other thread)
that would allow you to make JtR try your 30 "French alpha" characters
without requiring a recompile.
