Thanks a lot for your reply.  Your explanation was very clear.

However, can John 1.7.2 (the latest version) handle Apple's salted SHA1?

I've tried using the --format=ssha option and I just can't get it to work.
Is there a particular format that the hash/salt needs to be put in?
