Subject: john does not recognise some special characters

I found running john 1.7.2 or john 1.7.0.1 for windows binary that some 
characters such as ~ ! ; are not used by john in password cracking. For 
example. I use the password 34~56asdfghj and then put it in a wordlist and 
try to crack it and it does not appear in found passwords.(john.pot) Any 
suggestions?
