I'm still trying to learn how much does JtR loose when it comes to the 
external filters, but as far as I can see *for now* it's not a very big one.

So, to make use of the 8 processors, why don't you run 8 different instances 
of JtR with the external:parallel filter set to 1/8, 2/8, and so on?
