I thought we haven't yet asked/approved Sayantan getting his mask mode
stuff into the main bleeding-jumbo tree (rather than his fork of it).
Is this what ended up happening anyway?  If so, I think we need to
revert.  I think Sayantan should at least bring the bitmaps to a more
reasonable state first, and then we'll need to give these formats some
testing in his branch.

(Sorry, I have not looked yet.)
