Here's one more data point: john-1.7.8-jumbo-8 works.

$ ../run/john pw

path.c is the same for john-1.7.8-jumbo-8 and john-1.7.9-jumbo-3.
recovery.c as well.

I would suggest having a closer look at the options.c and john.c diffs
between these versions.
