Then it feels similar to what I observed.  I wonder what in John itself
can cause things like that.

Anyway, I've started a Mac OS X update from 10.5 to 10.5.8.  We'll see
if it makes a difference.  Unfortunately, I won't be able to downgrade
easily, which is one reason why I hesitated to update this development-only
system until now. :-(
